Rexouium
The Rexouium (Latin-derived: "King Caretaker") is a fictional open species and avatar base originally created by Rezillo Ryker for VRChat. First appearing in VRChat in 2020, it has since grown into one of the most widely-used furry avatar bases on the platform — so prevalent that it is commonly regarded as the informal "default avatar" of furries on VRChat. Its combination of strong technical foundations, high customizability, cross-platform support, and open species status has spawned a broad ecosystem of third-party bases, accessories, and community derivatives.
📼 Archive Note: The Rexouium represents one of VRChat's most culturally significant avatar species. Its history — from a single creator's design to a platform-wide phenomenon — is a core part of VRChat's furry community history. This page aims to document the species, its technical evolution, and its ecosystem comprehensively.
Name & Etymology[edit]
The name Rexouium is a compound portmanteau constructed by Rezillo Ryker:
| Component | Origin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Rex | Latin | King |
| ouium | Invented by Ryker | Caretaker |
| Rexouium | Combined | "King Caretaker" |
The name reflects the species' lore identity: beings who serve as guardian caretakers of their world, holding a position of both authority and responsibility.
Species Lore[edit]
The Rexouium is a fictional species conceived entirely by Rezillo Ryker. In the lore established by Ryker:
- Rexouiums are the king caretakers of their world — protectors and guardians by nature
- They are notably tall, typically reaching approximately 7 feet in height
- They are skilled climbers with strong legs built for speed and jumping
- Their canine-adjacent facial structure gives them a familiar but distinct appearance
As an open species, the Rexouium's lore is not strictly enforced — community members are free to create their own interpretations, characters, and derivative designs without requiring direct permission from the creator, as long as they adhere to the general open species guidelines and credit Ryker as the species' origin.

Original Avatar Base[edit]
The canonical Rexouium base, sold by Rezillo Ryker on Gumroad, is considered the species standard. All third-party bases are derivatives of this original design concept.
Technical Features[edit]

| Full Body Tracking (FBT) | Pre-rigged and ready for full-body VR tracking out of the box |
| Eye Tracking | Native VRChat eye tracking support, built in |
| Face Tracking | Full support; pre-configured on the HD Digi version |
| Facial Visemes | Full phoneme-driven visemes for voice-synced expressions |
| Leg Styles | Digitigrade and plantigrade options (newer versions) |
| Customization Blendshapes | Extensive sliders for species adaptation and body shaping |

| VRM Format | Supported in addition to VRChat SDK format |
| MMD Visemes | Available via community add-ons |
Versatility & Adaptability[edit]
A defining characteristic of the Rexouium base is its remarkable adaptability. The canine-adjacent facial structure, combined with extensive blendshape sliders, means the base can be modified to represent a wide range of animal species beyond the default Rexouium appearance — including wolves, hyenas, ferrets, and many others. This versatility is a primary reason the base became so popular: a single purchase serves as a foundation for countless character types, and the broad compatibility means accessory and clothing creators target the Rexouium base specifically.
Distribution & Pricing[edit]
The base is sold via Rezillo Ryker's Gumroad store. A separate, more expensive commercial license is available for those wishing to use the model in physical merchandise or embedded commercial digital products. Commissions do not require the commercial license.
Ryker explicitly states on his Gumroad listing that the product is non-refundable as a digital good, with limited exceptions for accidental double-purchases.
Free Public Versions[edit]
Free public avatar versions are available directly in VRChat, lowering the barrier to entry for new users:
| Version | Platform | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rexouium Digi HD | PC | HD version with digitigrade legs and face tracking pre-setup |
| Rexouium Legacy | PC | More optimized than HD; the older standard build |
| Rexouium Quest | Quest / Android | Highly optimized fallback; created by community contributor Craziux |
Open Species Ecosystem[edit]
As an officially declared open species, the Rexouium design can be used by any creator to produce derivative bases, characters, accessories, and designs — with credit given to Ryker as the species' originator. This decision dramatically accelerated the spread of the species and led to a rich creator ecosystem.
Third-Party Avatar Bases[edit]
Rexouium Evolved & EvoRex HD — by Tosca[edit]
Tosca (also known as xTosca) created a fully from-scratch Rexouium-species model in their own distinct style, not using any assets from the original Rezillo Ryker base.
"This is a brand new Rexouium model, not using any assets from the original, created in my own style."
— Tosca, Gumroad listing
| Product | Release | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Rexouium Evolved | 2021 | Digitigrade/plantigrade legs; full FBT; MMD visemes; Substance Painter files; Tosca's distinct art style |
| EvoRex HD | 2023 | Remaster of Evolved; split UVs for higher-resolution textures; two feather variations; free upgrade for Evolved owners; Quest-compatible planti version |
Technical note: Tosca pioneered dynamic digitigrade legs on the Rexouium Evolved using a Unity bone constraint method originally developed by DragonSkyRunner. More recent versions use a method by Reign04. At the time of the original Evolved release, VRChat did not support constraints for Android builds, so the digi rig was PC-only.
Commercial use of the EvoRex/EvoRex HD is unrestricted beyond the prohibition on redistributing model files themselves.
Rezuium — by Hirozu[edit]
The Rezuium (named as a portmanteau of "Rezillo" + "Rexouium") is a distinct Rexouium-species model created from scratch by Hirozu, with explicit permission from Rezillo Ryker.
"I was given permission by RezilloRyker to make this model and sell it."
— Hirozu, Gumroad listing
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Style | Distinct from both Ryker original and Tosca; Hirozu's own aesthetic |
| Face Tracking | Built-in; VRC Unity Face Tracking setup included |
| Clothing | Separate accessory/clothing package available |
| Distribution | Gumroad; public test version available in VRChat |
| Commercial ToS | Re-sale of the model itself prohibited; use as part of other content allowed with credit |
The HTC U24 Pro Commercial Incident[edit]
The Rezuium gained notable external visibility when it appeared in an HTC U24 Pro smartphone commercial. HTC initially published the commercial without crediting Hirozu, constituting a breach of the Rezuium's terms of service. Following community pressure, HTC republished the commercial with the appropriate creator credit. This incident is documented as a significant moment in VRChat creator rights history — one of the first instances of a VRChat avatar base appearing in a major consumer electronics advertisement.
Notable Community Derivatives[edit]
Beyond full bases, the Rexouium's open species status has generated a wide variety of derivative works from the community:
- Rexouium Pooltoy (by Furriest & Taeliou Wolf) — pooltoy-aesthetic variant with inflation/deflation systems, Quest-compatible, Substance Painter files included
- Numerous texture commissions, custom accessories, clothing packs, and species crossbreeds documented across the VRChat creator community
- The species is frequently referenced in VRChat avatar worlds, custom texturing streams on TikTok and Twitch, and creator marketplaces

Cultural Impact[edit]
The Rexouium holds a unique position in VRChat's cultural history. Its informal status as the "default avatar" of furries on VRChat reflects a convergence of factors rarely achieved by any single creator's work:
- Technical quality — FBT, face tracking, and eye tracking support out of the box at a time when many bases lacked these features
- Accessibility — Free public versions lower the barrier for new users; the paid version is priced reasonably for the feature set
- Versatility — Blendshapes that allow the base to represent dozens of species, creating value for a wide audience
- Open species — Enabling other creators to build on the design rather than compete with it, growing the ecosystem rather than fragmenting it
- Timing — Released in 2020 during a period of significant furry community growth in VRChat, the base rode a wave of new users actively seeking avatar options
As a result, the Rexouium has appeared in: community social worlds, professional hardware advertising (HTC), TikTok content, Twitch streams, custom merchandise, and fursuit commissions — a cross-media presence few VRChat-origin creations have achieved.
