Furality Online Xperience (abbreviated F.O.X., commonly known simply as Furality) is the world's largest virtual reality furry convention, held annually within VRChat and produced by Furality, Inc. — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation headquartered in Orlando, Florida. Since its first event in May 2020, Furality has grown from an experimental 2,692-person gathering into a record-breaking convention that has surpassed the attendance of every furry convention in history — virtual or in-person — including Anthrocon, the largest annual in-person furry convention in the world.

As of its eighth installment (Furality Somna, 2025), Furality holds the record for the largest furry convention attendance ever recorded, at 26,405 unique attendees, and has collectively raised over $218,000 for charitable organizations.

📼 Archive Priority: Furality represents one of the most significant recurring events in VRChat's history — a technical milestone, a cultural institution, and the defining proof that VRChat could host events at a scale previously thought impossible on the platform. VRCHistory considers this a Tier 1 documentation priority.

Origin & Founding[edit]

Furality was conceived in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when global lockdowns had cancelled in-person furry conventions worldwide. The idea was published on March 28, 2020 through a Telegram channel by its founder, Daltyn — a VRChat user who had himself joined the furry fandom through the platform. Daltyn and a small group of friends set out to create a VRChat-based convention as a way to bring the furry community together virtually.

The concept was initially proposed as a "convention that never ends" — the idea being that, since VRChat worlds remain online after any event concludes, the convention's spaces would persist indefinitely. This philosophy of permanent accessibility has remained a part of Furality's identity: convention worlds are typically reuploaded as public worlds after each event concludes.

The first event, held May 22–24, 2020, was intentionally small-scale — a test. It far exceeded expectations. What was hoped to be a modest proof of concept drew 2,692 attendees and raised $8,646.93 for SaveAFox Rescue. The result confirmed that a large-scale VR furry convention was not only viable — it was in demand.

In July 2020, Furality, Inc. was formally incorporated in Florida as a nonprofit corporation to provide institutional structure for all future events.

Furality, Inc.[edit]

Furality, Inc. is the organizational body behind all Furality events. Its formal mission:

"To provide a forum for attendees to gather to experience, learn, share, and celebrate anthropomorphic arts, including performing arts, such as improv and musical performances, and visual arts, such as cartoons, sketches, photography, 3D modeling, and digital design. Furality, Inc. will also collect donations to the benefit of selected charitable organizations, typically but not exclusively ones associated with animal welfare and/or preservation."

The F.O.X. Portal[edit]

One of Furality's most significant technical contributions to VRChat event management is the F.O.X. Portal — a custom-built web application that solves the fundamental scaling problem of running a convention for tens of thousands of simultaneous VRChat users.

VRChat worlds have a maximum capacity per instance (typically 40–80 users). A convention with 20,000+ attendees cannot exist in a single world — it must be distributed across hundreds of simultaneous instances. Furality's solution:

  • Dynamic instance creation — The F.O.X. Portal automatically spins up new world instances on demand as capacity fills
  • Attendee navigation — Registered attendees log into the web portal, view the live event schedule, and select which instance to join — receiving a VRChat invitation directly to their VR menu
  • Friends grouping — The portal allows users to join specific instances to be with their friends
  • Hundreds of instances — At peak events, Furality manages hundreds of simultaneous world instances across all five convention worlds

This infrastructure required a commercial agreement with VRChat — an ongoing licensing relationship that grants Furality the API access and scale needed to operate. This makes Furality one of the largest formal commercial event partners VRChat has ever supported.

Convention Structure[edit]

Each full Furality convention is built around five custom worlds created exclusively for that event, accessible only to registered attendees during the convention window:

World Purpose
Lobby / Entry Hub Central arrival point and orientation space
Meetup World Large social area for unstructured hangouts and community gatherings
Event Stage / Panel World Hosts scheduled panels, presentations, performances, and live events with holographic hosts
Club F.Y.N.N. 24/7 nightclub and rave space featuring a new DJ performer every hour; multi-genre, non-stop
Dealer's Den Expansive virtual marketplace with artist booths, vendor displays, and advertising

After each convention concludes, many worlds are reuploaded as public VRChat worlds for permanent community access.

Signature Features[edit]

  • Convention Shaders — Each event produces a unique custom shader (e.g., the Aqua Shader by Naito Ookami for Furality Aqua) available for attendees to apply to their avatars, creating a cohesive visual identity across the convention
  • Asset Packs — Premium registration tiers receive downloadable asset packs including props, avatar accessories, and Substance Painter files
  • Fireworks Show — Introduced at Furality Luma Festival (2023), the fireworks show has become a standard feature of all subsequent conventions
  • Community Showcase — A community-submitted short film and performance showcase, premiered at each convention
  • Furality Gateway — A two-way live video/audio portal placed in physical furry conventions (such as Megaplex), enabling real-time interaction between VRChat attendees and in-person convention-goers

Event Highlights[edit]

Furality Luma (2021) — The Breakthrough[edit]

Furality Luma was the event that signaled Furality was no longer experimental. Five custom-built bioluminescent worlds on the fictional planet Luma marked a dramatic leap in production quality. By its closing, Furality had become the third most attended furry event in the world. The team grew significantly, and the event established Furality's reputation for themed, fully realized virtual environments.

Furality Aqua (2022) — Record-Breaking Milestone[edit]

Furality Aqua surpassed 15,000 attendees, making Furality the largest furry convention ever at the time of closing — a record that had previously been held by in-person conventions. The Aqua Shader (by Naito Ookami) became one of the most recognizable visual signatures in VRChat furry history, transforming thousands of avatars into aquatic-themed versions of themselves.

Furality Umbra (2024) — Institutional Dominance[edit]

With 21,004 attendees — surpassing Anthrocon's 2024 attendance by more than 3,000 — Furality Umbra permanently established F.O.X. as the world's most attended furry convention. The event introduced a real-time solar eclipse that progressed live across all five worlds simultaneously, synchronized across all instances — a technical feat. $46,269 was raised for The Center Orlando.

Furality Somna (2025) — The Record[edit]

Furality Somna is the current record holder on every metric. Running June 5–9, 2025 (extended one day due to a VRChat server outage during the event), Somna drew 26,405 unique attendees and raised $109,000 for The Center Orlando — more than doubling Umbra's charity total.

The event introduced Somnatus, the convention's own constructed language woven into its dream-themed lore. Custom dream-world shaders, expanded worlds, and an in-depth narrative intro pushed the production scope further than any previous FOX convention. Despite server instability during the event — which Furality addressed with transparency, extending the convention rather than cutting it short — community reception was overwhelmingly positive.

Furality Ultra (2026) — Upcoming[edit]

Furality Ultra (F.9) is scheduled for June 4–7, 2026 in VRChat. Its theme is retro gaming — specifically the seventh generation of game consoles (mid-2000s to early 2010s, the era of the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3). Notably, Furality Ultra will be the first FOX event to require age verification (18+) for attendance, handled through VRChat's partner Persona. The charity partner is Resilient Hearts Animal Sanctuary.

Technical Significance[edit]

Furality is not merely a cultural event — it is a landmark in VRChat platform engineering. The problems Furality solved at scale have informed how large-scale events are run on VRChat more broadly:

  • Instance orchestration at convention scale — Managing hundreds of simultaneous instances across five worlds for 20,000+ concurrent users was unprecedented on VRChat when Furality first achieved it
  • Commercial API partnership — Furality's formal licensing agreement with VRChat was one of the first of its kind at this scale, demonstrating that VRChat could support commercial event infrastructure
  • Custom web portal — The F.O.X. Portal is purpose-built software that extends VRChat's native tooling, effectively creating a convention management system on top of the platform
  • Real-time cross-instance synchronization — Events like Umbra's live solar eclipse, synchronized across all world instances simultaneously, represent advanced use of VRChat's technical capabilities
  • Multi-platform accessibility — Each convention targets PC VR, desktop (non-VR), and Quest users, with separate optimized builds and guidance for each
  • 18+ verification infrastructure — Ultra's introduction of platform-level age verification at event registration represents a new frontier in VR event safety systems
